Why Is Dwayne Johnson in Prison in Fast 8?

Sunday, August 07, 2016

Fast 8 is full of surprises. First, we learned that Charlize Theron is on board as the franchise’s first female villain. Then, news broke that the movie will become the first American studio film to shoot in Cuba since Congress ended the U.S.’s embargo. All that andHelen Mirren is joining the cast? It’s hard to imagine how the movie itself could contain this many twists.
Well, actually, here’s one plot twist to start us off: in the new film, Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) will apparently be in prison.
In the films, Hobbs works for the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service; from where we left off in Furious 7, it’s hard to guess why he might be in prison. When we last parted ways with the character, he had thrown Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) into lockdown; that was basically that.
Based on the self-ascribed “Iceman” moniker in the Instagram caption, and a previous ‘gram of a very imposing-looking vehicle, the folks over at Cinemablend offer a guess that Hobbs is under cover at an Icelandic prison. It’s possible! But perhaps even more fascinating than imagining how Hobbs got in is dreaming up how he’ll get out—in spectacular fashion.
Let’s start with the obvious: Helen Mirren should clearly be the one to free the Rock. But how will she do it?
Here are some ideas: she could pull an “I’m an innocent old British lady” act before action movie-ing her way through the prison, then back out with Hobbs by her side. Or she could drive that aforementioned giant vehicle straight through some fences and walls, lips pursed with determination. Or, perhaps most expediently, she could simply impersonate the Queen and demand he be set free. Who’d say no to that?
